Myturn – A story about learners and internships!

Students who gain theoretical knowledge from their academic work for a few years focus on acquiring practical and technical knowledge related to the subject they are studying in the last year or two of their academic journey. It’s called their internship. Most probably during the end years of the course, the students are expected to receive corporate practical training related to the subject knowledge they have learned through their academic journey. Also, in addition to this, there are people who hope to get the corporate practical training they need after studying advanced technical diplomas, higher diplomas, diplomas, or certificate courses related to a particular subject area. Therefore, the internship is one of the main ways for all of them to get corporate practical training.

Difficulty in finding internships can be mentioned as a major problem that we see at present. There may be various reasons for this. But, basically, there are two identified issues that affect the emergence of problems in this regard. As the first matter, it can be stated that some sectors have collapsed due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Therefore, a student who receives his first degree through a scope that coincides with a field that has collapsed in that way is more likely to be uncertain about finding an internship. Secondly, there are enough internships in some fields, but due to the lack of proper communication, it can be indicated that the students are not aware of them. In such cases, they are unable to get proper training due to not being able to easily find an internship that suits their scope. Also, the delay in finding an internship wastes the valuable time they have for training. Furthermore, the lack of an internship or the difficulty of finding one is one of the strongest reasons for students to develop mental health issues such as depression.

On the other hand, there are some organizations (public and private) that cannot find the places where they have the trained, quality labor they need. They have to spend an unnecessary amount of time and resources simply to find suitable human resources. There are small and medium enterprises (SME) in particular, and without access to quality labor, they need to take the next leap.

Therefore, based on the discussion of the problems related to such internships, the creation of this Myturn platform was started according to the concept of Dr. Nadeesha Chandrasena. Myturn is a voluntary service that aims to connect corporations that offer paid internships and people who want to get internships. So far, a group of people with expertise in various fields have been involved in creating the Myturn platform. Currently, more than thirty (30) members are volunteering their professional knowledge to Myturn in five (05) divisions, namely the Project Monitoring Team, Technical Team, Communication and Public Relations Team, Human Resources Team, and Legal Team. Also, while creating the Myturn platform, Sanmark Solutions has come forward to provide the opportunity to create the Myturn app and Myturn website for free through them.

We are looking forward to carrying out further awareness activities about Myturn through all social media networks in the future. Likewise, through our blog site, you will be able to gain knowledge about how to register for the Myturn platform, how to provide and get an internship through Myturn, how to get support in case of an internship-related problem, as well as the needs of the disabled community related to internships.
